Dear Parents,

What a great first three weeks of school.  I am extremely impressed by our class, and I know we’re going to have a very exciting and fun-filled year.  I am thrilled to have the opportunity to teach all of your children.

Open House Night: Thank you to those of you who were able to make it to our Open House.  If you couldn’t make it, here are some of the highlights:

Reading (with Mrs. Allen): We have been working hard on finding “Just Right” books: not too easy and not too challenging.  Students should bring their “Just Right” book home each day because their reading homework each night is to read 20 minutes in that book.  If they want to read additional minutes in that book or in other “fun” books they checked out, that’s great!  You can really help support school by making sure that they do that homework each night.  They also need to bring that book back to school each day because they have time to read here, too.

Spelling: They will be working on Words Their Way words, which is our developmental spelling program.  This means that they will be working on spelling patterns at their own levels.  These are the words that they will be tested on, but keep in mind that it is more important for them to learn the patterns in the words than to just memorize them for the test.  *There are also high frequency spelling words which will come home as homework on Tuesday nights.

Math (with Mrs. Anderson): Students will receive math homework on Mondays and Wednesdays.  Also be on the lookout for the “Family Letter” at the beginning of each unit because it will help you understand which concepts they are working on and how—it may be different from the way you learned it! J

Friday folders: Please review the papers that are in the envelope and go over any necessary corrections.  Then sign the envelope and return the empty envelope to school on Monday.

Discipline: Our rules are: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Friendly. Those rules are broken down more specifically for each school setting. Mrs. Allen and I are always modeling those rules, teaching and re-teaching them, and looking for positive ways to reinforce them.

If for some reason any student is having trouble following the rules, we have the following consequences (usually in this order):

1. Reminder from the teacher

2. Make a private refocus plan with the teacher.

3. Share your refocus plan with your parents.

4. Office referral after three refocus forms.

We believe we are all partners in your child’s education, so we really appreciate your input and feedback. Please be in touch if you have questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Ginger Anderson
