October 2016 Newsletter

Dear Families,

We are so excited about the month of October. Our teachers have been working in designing engaging learning opportunities that address our state standards. For example, in Physical Education students have been biking and will have their swimming lessons this month. In reading, students have been learning about characters and retelling a story.

SPOTLIGHT ON DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills)

DIBELS are measures that help determine how students are performing on reading skills. The critical skills that are necessary for successful reading are: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. DIBELS assess students on four of these critical skills and provides evidence of students’ overall reading status and show their progress towards the grade level goals.
These measures are administered three times in the school year: fall, winter, and spring. Teachers utilize these data to provide targeted instruction in the classroom. Teachers also utilize other reading assessment measures to collect more evidence on each student as a reader to determine the best support.
