1st Grade!

Planes de la Clase y Vocabulario

Each week I will update this page with lesson plans and vocabulary so you know what your child is learning and can practice at home. We will be using a curriculum called "Descubre el español con Santillana" (Level A), which aligns with Common Core and the new Wyoming State Standards for Spanish.

Semana 1: (9/19-9/22) No School Friday Welcome and Procedures plus review of last year's vocab 

Semana 2: (9/26-9/30) review of last year's vocab We will practice greetings, numbers and body parts, colors  by taking our old words and turning them into a story. Our story will have 3 characters (personajes) who start as enemies (enemigos) and when the students help solve their problem, they will become friends (amigos). Student will then draw a picture of the main idea or moral of the story.

Semana 3: (10/3-10/7) Continuation of last week's review story Students will practice describing the characters to a partner and will also try to retell the story to a partner. Volunteers will be allowed to retell the story to the class.

Semana 4: (10/10-10/13 No School Friday) Numbers #11-20  and simple math in Spanish

Semana 5: (10/17-10/21) Intro to unit on family and tolerance of differences 

We will be using Venn Diagrams to compare how things are igual (=) and diferente by asking and answering the questions ¿Cómo son iguales? How are they the same? and ¿Cómo son diferentes? How are they different? We still start by comparing animals and fruits, then characters from the movie trolls, then to comparing individual people. (i.e. they are the same because they are both people, but they are different because one is a boy and the other a girl... or adult and child..etc). From here we will open the unit with our Essential Questions: 

¿Qué es una familia?  What is a family?  ¿Cada familia es igual?  Is every family the same?

Students will offer ideas of what they think a family is. I will respond with a question any time I hear a generalization (for example if the student says that a family lives together, I might ask if everyone in the family always lives together in the same house). We will conclude that in their case every family is a mixture of adults and children, but that different families have different numbers of adults of children and that who those adults are might not always be the same.

Semana 6: (10/24-10/27 No School Friday)  End of Trimester 1

We will start to an introduction on counting by 10s (to 100) with the goal that in the future they will be able to say the ages of different family members.  Once they can count by 10s they will be able to count to 100 by applying what they already know in counting to 20.

We will also begin learning how to name some of the members of a family and how to introduce them, including:

Semana 7: (10/31-11/4)

Review and practice identifying family members by drawing and labeling our family 

Also a brief intro to Mexican holiday The Day of the Dead (el Día de los Muertos)

Semana 8: (11//7-11/10 No School Friday) Review family members, adding words

Semana 9: (11/14-11/18)  plus (11/21-11/22) ¡Feliz Día de Acción de Gracias! This week we will do an information gap activity to help us practice family members and we will draw a basic family tree

Semana 10: (11/28-12/2) Introduction on how to describe people, including their hair and eyes.

Semana 11: (12/5-12/9) We started talking about what letter sounds are different in Spanish and English, including "h" like in hola, "j" like in ojos, "ll" like in me llamo and ñ like in niño. Then we learned the vowel sounds in Spanish because Spanish is a very phonetical language it is a lot easier to learn how to read than English, but we have to know the vowel sounds. Practice with this vowel song! Next we practiced naming and describing family on the website Mi Mundo en Palabras. We also learned a few more describing words. 

Semana 12: (12/12-12/16) Today we reviewed describing words and practiced using them by playing "Guess Who" in Spanish. Next we choose a member of our family to introduce and describe.

Semana 13: (12/19-12/23) This week we will finish working on our presentation and share it with the class.

Semana 17: (1/30-2/3) Monday and Tuesday classes continued practicing calendar and seasons, then we focused in on winter time and what clothes we need in the winter (the big 5). Wednesday, Thursday and Friday classes are a week behind.

Semana 18: (2/6-2/10) End of second Trimester 0)Students will review seasons, weather and winter clothing and they will learn about different activities that we can do in different season.

Semana 19: (2/13-2/16-No School Friday) Students will write which activity is their favorite activity for summer and winter.

Semana 20: (2/21-2/24-No School Monday) We will learn a few new words for clothes (what we wear under our snow clothes) then they will follow directions to build and label a snowman.

Semana 21: (2/27-3/2) Today will practice clothing by reading the book "Froggy se viste" Students will follow along with the story by manipulating their cutout characters and clothing. We will also learn about the country Perú.


Semana 22: (3/6-3/10) We will continue our unit by reviewing how to say which colors we like and by learning about  more ropa

Semana 23: (3/13-3/17) We will practice cloth vocabulary by dressing potato heads, reading conversations and making noticings (that in spanish the adjective goes after instead of before) and we will also play "Veo, veo" (I spy) for clothing.

Semana 24: (3/20-3/24) Students wil be assessed in their ability to say what clothing they like in a complete sentence. First their speaking will be assessed as they compliment something I friend is wearing (ie: Me gusta la camiseta verde. I like the green shirt.) Then they will show this skill in writing my drawing a picture of them wearing their favorite outfit and describing the outfit they like.

Intro to Unit 3 of our Curriculum "Descubre el español" inlcuding the characters and he country of the Dominican Republic. The first lesson is learning vocabulary for the playground

Semana 26: (4/17-4/21) Unit 3.1 "Los juegos" vocabulary related to the school playground (el patio de la escuela)

Semana 27: (4/24-4/28)  Review and Practice invites, then go outside to playground for interpersonal speaking evaluation

Semana 28: (5/1-5/5)  Intro to 3.2 "los lugares" the places in the school

Semana 30: (5/15-5/19) Review 3.1-3.2 plus 

 Intro to Unit 3.3 Los Útiles Escolares (School Supplies) and practice with singular and plural nouns

Semana 31: (5/22-5/26) 

Monday and Friday : next week's lesson... Tues, Weds, Thurs: No Spanish due to swimming

Semana 32: (5/30-6/2)  No School Monday Continue practice with School Supplies including saying what you need to complete a task.

Ex: Necesito __(las tijeras)__. I need __(the scissors)__.

Semana 33: (6/5-6/9)  Unit 3.4 ¿Qué haces con tus útiles? We will use verbs to say what classroom activities we do with the different school supplies.

Yo corto con la tijeras. I cut with the scissors.  

Yo pego con el pegamento.  I glue with the glue. 

Yo escribo con el lápiz.  I write with the pencil. 

Yo coloreo con los crayones.  I color with the crayons.
