Music Standards

TCSD #1, Elementary Music

Kindergarten:

  1. Students will create music using instruments or voice to accompany a poem or story.

  2. Students will develop instrumental skills by reading and performing quarter note, quarter rest, and two eighth note rhythms.

First Grade:

  1. Students will develop instrumental skills by performing a bordun on mallet instruments.

  2. Students will develop music reading skills by reading and performing quarter note, quarter rest, and two eighth note rhythms.

Second Grade:

  1. Students will develop vocal skills by demonstrating the ability to match pitch to Do, Re, Mi, Sol, and La.

  2. Students will create music by improving a musical answer to a given musical question.

Third Grade:

  1. Students will develop music reading skills by identifying pitches in the treble clef.

  2. Students demonstrate understanding of basic musical terminology by matching given terms with their definitions.

Fourth Grade:

  1. Students list four terms that music and visual arts have in common.

  2. Students will demonstrate their understanding of music in relation to culture by identifying music from various cultures.

Fifth Grade-Sixth Grade:

  1. Students will perform a passage from a musical piece being prepared for a performance with appropriate technique, musical expression, and stage presence.

  2. Students demonstrate an understanding of basic musical terminology by matching given terms with their definitions.

  3. Students will demonstrate the ability to distinguish music from two distinct music eras by answering questions in a multiple choice format.
